Villa Cora

Built in the 1870s by Baron Oppenheim for his wife, Villa Cora is a love letter in art and architecture. Opulent in the extreme, but by no means over-blinged, the interiors reflect the eclectic passions of the aristo and his belle – namely roses, the Orient, ornate parquet, and spectacular frescoes and statuary. The massive heated outdoor pool – the only one in Florence – comes courtesy of the 21st-century renovation, as does the flawless service.

On the Oltrarno, south of the river, Villa Cora sits on a strip of opulent villas on Viale Machievelli, which cuts through the beautiful manicured parkland of Giardini di Boboli.

These rooms are on either the third floor of the main villa or in poolside Villino Eugenia and look out over the hotel’s gardens and surrounding hills. Each of the rooms on the third floor has a private balcony, wooden floors and refined Moorish decorations. Junior Suite

These stylish suites are in either the main villa or in Villino Eugenia and have views over either the hotel gardens of the surrounding hillside. With design inspired by their famous guests – including Tchaikovsky, Princess Eugenia, Grace Kelly and Madame Debussy – these suites are on the first, Noble and second floors. Imperial Suite

This suite is on the Nobel Floor and has views of the city and the internal garden. With original frescoes by 19th-century artists Angelo Pietrasanta and Luigi Samoggia, and a red-velvet-canopied four-poster bed, this suite is dressed for dignitaries (Japanese Emperor Akihito is a former guest); there’s a small private balcony and a lounge area with a sofa, desk and antique furnishings. The second bedroom has a blue-velvet-canopied four-poster, and each bedroom has a Carrara-marble-lined ensuite bathroom with a bath tub.
