The Jaffa

Set steps from the Mediterranean, by Tel Aviv’s oldest port, monastery and hospital turned luxury hotel the Jaffa offers a tale of two cities. In its older wing, rooms and suites sit alongside cloisters planted with the neighbourhood’s signature orange trees, and original features (cathedral-esque ceilings, traditional tiling, stained-glass) nod to its past life. Across the 13th-century courtyard, a contemporary wing has minimalist styling by designer John Pawson, bringing the hotel bang up-to-date, using photographs from local Israeli artists and tables carved with backgammon boards to pay tribute to tradition. Like its increasingly cool beachside ‘hood, it’s made a smooth and slick transition into the now – high praise is deserved.

The Jaffa Hotel is set along the ancient port of Jaffa, Tel Aviv’s oldest and southernmost neighbourhood, on the Mediterranean coastline.
