Anouska Hempel knows a thing or two about looking good (when you’re born with a face like hers, you can hardly help it). The Franklin is Hempel in hotel form: refined and ravishing in equal measures. Taking a cue from its sister Blakes, the hotel throws its cap at foreign lands – in this case, Italy. Even Gina Lollobrigida couldn’t fault the taffeta-and-velvet-bedecked dining room, the glittering bar, or the ravishing rooms and their fancy sandstone bathrooms. One thing is deliciously English, though, and that’s the setting: a prime cut of cultured Kensington, with some of the city’s best bits on your doorstep.

These rooms have extra space and a few more city-chic flourishes. Each bathroom has a rain shower, and windows overlook the plane trees in the garden or the Knightsbridge skyline. Junior Suite

Thanks to Anouska Hempel’s design flair, the Junior Suites are bright and contemporary, decorated with mirrors, and elegant furnishings. They’re high-tech too, with Bluetooth-enabled, Samsung flatscreen Apple TVs and Jenson phones. Each suite has a high-spec bathroom featuring fancy Italian sandstone, with a majestic bath tub (or shower) and a stash of full-size Penhaligon’s bath products. These suites survey the garden or Knightsbridge in all its finery. There’s a desk and a minibar stashed with gourmet munchies too. The Suites’ high-ceilinged splendour is elegant and timeless; the views are charming, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens. Presidential Suite

Flooded with daylight and overlooking a leafy park square, this 62sq m suite features dark-wood parquet floors, vast mirrors and sumptuous furnishings, ensuring it has lashings of splendour. The suite has a living room with a velvet sofa and armchairs, a walk-in closet and a bedroom with a king-size four-poster bed dressed in luxurious Frette linens. The ensuite bathroom is lined with mirrors and white marble, and has twin sinks and a walk-in shower.
