Nine Skies

Comforting, refreshing, warming, very moreish: we could be talking about the perfect cuppa, but in fact it’s Nine Skies we have in mind. This boutique bungalow set on a working tea estate in the town of Demodara is a delicious tonic for body, mind and soul. Harking back to the region’s colonial days, rooms are styled with a refined British sensibility, but things are firmly Sri Lankan in the kitchen – and beyond your bedroom, where Hill Country’s emerald-green scenery beckons. Enjoy delicious rice and curries, take a dip in the view-toting pool and unwind in the snug library with a book or two. Just add tea (or a G&T from the honesty bar) when you’re thirsty.

Nine Skies is sitting pretty on a tea-fringed hill in the town of Demodara, near Ella, roughly 200 kilometres east of Colombo.

Demodara Room

Each of the three Demodara Bedrooms has views of the hotel’s upcountry garden and the tea fields and rugged mountains beyond. These bedrooms each come with a king-size bed, a cosy sitting area, a private veranda and an ensuite bathroom with a bath tub. Handsome antique furnishings and custom-made pieces provide additional eye-candy. Welimada is a warm, cosy bedroom bathed in light; its USP is its twin-aspect valley-side and garden-facing views. The private veranda looks west, offering vistas of the working tea factory and Demodara Loop. Badulla, to the front of the bungalow, is private and peaceful, opening directly onto the garden and swimming pool through French windows. Tucked off the central hallway, Hali-Ela is similar to the Badulla room, but it can connect with its neighbouring twin bedroom, Nine Arches, to make a Family Suite.

The Ella Rock Suite

Enjoy the soul-soothing garden views from this private, romantic suite, which has a light-bathed open-plan layout and French windows. The separate sitting area has a king-sized bed and plush sofas; the ensuite bathroom has a rain shower and bath tub. It’s perfect for couples and families alike, since the snug sitting room can be converted into a kids’ bedroom.

This cosy room has two single beds dressed in soft cotton duvets. It’s designed for two friends travelling together or two children; parents can book an interconnecting Demodara Bedroom.
