Nantipa

We admire a hotel that proudly proclaims its love for its locale. With Nantipa, a beachfront boutique stay in hard-to-reach but easy-to-adore surf hangout Santa Teresa, there’s a lot to love: the pura vida is strong here, with Cabo Blanco National Park’s menagerie of animals, the dazzling array of marine life to snorkel with and nearly a mile of soft sandy beach, all part of a Unesco blue zone (a signpost for serene living). The hotel cares dearly for these environs, so it’s impressively eco-friendly in attitude and practice, and brings its heritage front and centre, with suite names from the ancient Chorotegan tribe’s language and tribal-style architecture, and several generations’ worth of recipes used in the restaurant. So, whether you’ve come to surf, sunbathe, or seek out adventure, Nantipa will sweep you up in its enthusiasm.

Nantipa is by surf haven Santa Teresa Beach at the southwestern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. It shares the shorefront with luxurious celeb homes and well-heeled resorts, but feels secluded still.

Nanku Suites King Bed

Nanku means ‘home’ in the Chorotega language, and you’ll certainly feel warmly welcome in these burnished bohemian suites. You’ll have either a terrace or a balcony overlooking jungly greenery, and up to four guests can stay in the separate bedroom with a king-size bed and living room (with two day-beds), making it ideal for breaks with family or friends. Decor is stylishly modern, with sleek wicker furnishings and wooden accents, with local handicrafts (and a hammock) to give a sense of place, and the bathroom has a shower and twin sinks, plus an alfresco shower for bathing with a view. Manti Bungalow

These 80sq m bungalows have a cool coastal feel, with their private plunge pool and furnished terrace (with a hammock to sway in), and the shore just a few steps away. Decor is modern with wooden accents, wicker furnishings and splashes of bright blue. There’s a king-size bed and bathrooms have both an indoor and outdoor shower, plus twin sinks. Ninta Bungalow Ocean Front

Named for the Chorotegan word for ‘beach’, these romantic 80sq m bungalows have glass walls to maximise the views out to the ocean, while a huge interior mirror makes the room feel spacious. There’s a terrace with a plunge pool, seating and a black-fringed hammock, and indoors the style is modern yet organic with rattan and wicker pieces and wood accents. There’s a king-size bed, positioned to face the shore, and the ensuite bathroom has a rain shower and twin sinks, but you may prefer to freshen up in the outdoor shower. Plus, you’ll have a Smart TV with streaming channels, dining table and chairs, desk, climate control, tea- and coffee-making kit, free bottled water, minibar and WiFi. Children must be 13 or over to stay here, due to the proximity to the water.

Beachfront Villa

Each of these 180sq m beachfront villas has a private infinity pool, outdoor hammocks that swing in the sea breeze and direct access to the beach. Inside each split-level there's a fully equipped kitchen and a living room with large glass sliding doors that open onto the poolside terrace. Each villa has three bedrooms – two with king-size beds and one with two queen-sized beds – all have ocean views and an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower.
