Steps from Rome’s famous Spanish ones, Hotel Vilòn is an elegant, art-filled boutique retreat in the shadow of the Palazzo Borghese. Esteemed neighbours aside, this former boarding school has been transformed into a small-scale hotel with just 18 rooms. Several of them overlook the Palazzo’s secret gardens; nab one with a furnished terrace suspended over them. The all-day bar extends out to the courtyard in fine weather, and you don’t have to wait for the bell to ring for the fun to start (first orders are taken at 10.30am). Don’t be fooled by the bistro’s Adelaide moniker: there’s nothing Antipodean about this seasonal Roman fare.

The namesake private terrace overlooks the Palazzo Borghese’s private garden, but these rooms are just as attractive inside, thanks to the marble bathroom, king-size bed and hardwood floors. The total space is 30sq m, with an extra 15sq m alfresco terrace. The ensuite bathroom has a walk-in rain-head shower. Twin beds are available on request. Vilòn Suite

Set on the first floor, this 86sq m suite has a living area with velvet armchairs and antique furniture from the Fifties and Seventies, a king-size bed and a marble ensuite bathroom with twin sinks, a walk-in rain-head shower and a Turkish bath. Vilòn Terrace Suite Garden

The hotel has two of these suites, each a sophisticated hideaway. The first, 83sq m Melangolo, is named after Via dell’ Arancio’s ancient nickname, and is light and bright painted in neutral hues; it has a living room and marble bathroom with a walk-in shower. The second, 87sq m Borghese, is decorated in sultrier hues and has Art Deco furnishings, a bathroom with a bath tub and walk-in shower and a walk-in wardrobe. Both sit on the second floor and have a bedroom with a king-size bed, plus a furnished private terrace overlooking Palazzo Borghese’s gardens. And there’s a Tivoli Bluetooth radio, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, free minibar with soft drinks, free WiFi and bespoke bath products. Borghese can be made up with twin beds on request, and one extra bed can be added to Melangolo.
