Ever since John Profumo first laid eyes on Christine Keeler as she basked in Cliveden’s pool, it’s been clear that this Berkshire boutique hotel was destined to be a Mr & Mrs Smith retreat of choice. As well as being a celebrated haunt for politicos and literati, this majestic neoclassical manor, with its air of not-so-faded grandeur, has had decadence, scandal and intrigue bound up in its walls since the day it was built – to house the Duke of Buckingham’s mistress, no less.

Each of these 40-45sq m rooms has a king-size bed (or twins, on request) and a cosy lounge space – some with a working fireplace. There’s also an ensuite bathroom with either a shower over the bath or a walk-in shower and separate bath tub.

Junior Suite

Decorated in classic style with soaring ceilings and period features, the 60 sq m Junior Suites have a handmade king-size bed, picturesque views of the lawns and a separate lounge area – some have fireplaces, too. The ensuite bathroom has either a bath tub with an overhead shower or a bath tub with a walk-in shower and Asprey bath products. You'll also find a TV, free WiFi and free bottled water. Some suites have a double sofabed (for two children or one adult), some fit an extra bed (for one child), and one suite can fit a double sofabed and an extra bed (free for children aged two and under, £75 a night for three to 16 year-olds).

Luxurious and generously proportioned suites with high ceilings, decorated with antiques and original works of art, with very spacious lounge areas, and all enjoying spectacular open views of the estate, some even look over the iconic nineteenth-century Parterre, designed by Fleming. Prince of Wales Suite

This lavishly furnished 75sq m suite, has Regency-style furnishings, scarlet feature walls, traditional artwork and an ornate fireplace. The suite is located in the main mansion, overlooking the parterre gardens from the bedroom and separate living room. There’s a dressing area, a king-size bed and an dramatic ensuite festooned with dark-red frescoes. The suite has a TV, DVD/CD player, roll-top baths, under-floor heating. A double sofabed can sleep two children or one adult (free for children aged two and under, £75 a night for three to 16 year-olds).

Spring Cottage

This 19th-century, mock-Tudor guesthouse, which comfortably sleeps six, is nestled riverside among Cliveden’s National Trust woodland. Upstairs, a grand double bedroom overlooking the Thames shares a luxurious bathroom with a smaller children’s bedroom. This room has a single bed, a pull-out mattress and plenty of floor space for a cot. The second spacious double is on the ground floor and has an ensuite bathroom with a large freestanding tub. Opposite is a cosy snug, as well as a very large lounge with an open fireplace. There's also a country kitchen with an Aga and a large wooden table that seats six. When the weather's fine, guests can sit on the outdoor porch, or in the secluded, Secret Garden-like riverbank grounds. Spring Cottage is essentially a self-catering property, but guests can take advantage of all the hotel facilities of the main house. A butler can be provided at an additional charge.

Lady Astor Suite

The unique and luxurious 75sqm Lady Astor Suite has high ceilings and scenic views of the grounds. Formerly Lady Astor’s own bedroom, the suite has changed little since her residence and is decorated with original works of art and antiques. There is a large private terrace with a table and seating for six people, benches and sun loungers, and a spacious lounge area. The room has a king-size bed, with space to accommodate two extra beds (free for children aged two and under, £75 a night for three to 16 year-olds). The ensuite bathroom is similarly opulent, with a bath tub and shower, as well as a separate make-up area. There is a large plasma TV and WiFi. The suite is available for a wedding ceremony of up to 60 people.

Two Bedroom Deluxe Suite – The Inchiquin Suite

The newly refurbished Inchiquin Suite is on the top floor of the east wing, with views of the grand drive, Fountain of Love and the gardens. Classic and sumptuous, the suite is decorated with luxurious European fabrics and antique furniture with a colour scheme of soft cream and coral. There is a spacious bedroom with a king-size bed, and a second king-size bed in the large living room can sleep two children or two adults ((free for children aged two and under, £75 a night for three to 16 year-olds).
