Chromata San Nicholas Cave House Villa

With a cliffside perch at the highest point of Santorini’s volcanic caldera, San Nicholas Cave House Villa is a one-of-a-kind escape with access to the Chromata hotel and its prime-placed infinity pool. Inside, it’s a peaceful haven of smooth, arching whitewashed walls and muted pops of colour: think pastel-painted weathered antique furniture, intricately woven Missoni throws and lone orchid flowers leaning in artisan pottery. Outside, there are two terraces with space for up to 30 to join you for dinner, and a sundeck and plunge pool. Beyond that, there’s a view that really has to be seen to be believed (and even then it seems surreal).

Walk down a narrow street from Imerovigli’s main square and there’s Chromata lounging over the Cliffside, at the highest point of the caldera rim. It’s snuggled up to Smith stay Iconic Santorini, and capital Thira is a five-minute drive away.

Chromata Villa

Formerly a watch post for centurions, this unique two-storey villa sits on the footpath between Oia and Thira. There’s breathtaking caldera views from balconies on each level, which can be enjoyed from a private plunge pool; and interiors are luxurious with two bedrooms, three bathrooms (one with a stone tub the size of a small swimming pool), and a living room. Furnishings are antique or upcycled, walls are white and decorative chunks of natural rock, candles and splashes of colour (a Missoni throw here, a weathered antique sideboard there) add plenty of character. Up to six guests can stay here, and the suite has a flatscreen TV, pre-loaded iPod and dock, Nespresso coffee machine, free WiFi, kettle with a selection of teas, free bottled water, air-conditioning and Bulgari bath products. Butler service is available on request.
