Casa Talia

Casa Talia, an intimate seven-room B&B hotel in the heart of Unesco-protected Modica, is the brainchild of two Milanese designers – who have used the hotel as a showcase for their classy stylings. Modern features complement a layout inspired by Sicily's rich cultural past, and the result is a laid-back retreat in the midst of the island's sun-baked countryside.

The 23sq m Sirah room has a traditional bamboo ceiling, a pretty tiled floor and a private balcony with views of picturesque gardens and the historic centre of Modica. There’s a king-size bed, an ensuite bathroom with a shower and space for a cot on request; the room also has a writing desk, free WiFi, a flatscreen TV, air-conditioning and a minibar.

These spacious rooms have a private balcony or terrace overlooking the picturesque gardens and the historic centre of Modica, and an ensuite bathroom with a shower. Tiled in striking white and blue, 24sq m Mediterraneo has a king-size bed, a private entrance from the garden and an ensuite bathroom with a shower. 30sq m Sciara has terracotta tiling with Arabian touches. Both have space for a cot or extra bed on request. There's also a writing desk, free WiFi, a flatscreen TV, air-conditioning and a minibar.

Superior Suite

These airy 44–49sq m suites (Talia, Meridiana, Scirocco, Zenzero and Ginestre) have a 13–15sq m private terrace and garden overlooking the cathedral, and an ensuite bathroom with a shower. Stone walls, a traditional bamboo ceiling and striking stone and terracotta floors give these suites contemporary Arabic flair. There’s a king-size bed, a single bed, a mezzanine living area and direct access to the gardens. The suites have space for two extra beds or cots on request. There’s also a writing desk, free WiFi, a flatscreen TV, air-conditioning and a minibar. Some suites can accommodate four guests, others only three.

Deluxe Suite

These light, all-white suites include 60sq m Buendia and 24sq m Agave. Buendia has a large private terrace overlooking the cathedral. Stairs lead up to a living area with a kitchenette and dining table; downstairs, there’s a double bed (or three single beds), a large cave-hewn shower room and space for a cot on request. Agave may be a little smaller, but it has bags of rustic charm and a large terrace. Both suites also have a writing desk, free WiFi, a flatscreen TV, air-conditioning and a minibar.
