Camellia Hills

Camellia Hills – in the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country – may have heaps of history on its doorstep, but this hotel is a thoroughly modern affair. The island’s Central Highlands are laid out before you: for the uninitiated, that’s a whole lot of plantation green (with Castlereagh Lake making a splash in the landscape). Non-tea-drinkers need not apply – this is a land where days are spent rolling from one tea estate to the next, with a backdrop of some seriously lush countryside that the British, back in the day, just couldn’t get enough of.

You’ll find Camellia Hills in Sri Lanka’s Castlereagh Valley, in the centre of the island and east of capital Colombo.

This 270sq ft room overlooking Castlereagh Lake has traditional tea-country decor (think timber floors, ceiling fans and tiled bathrooms). There’s a king-size four-poster bed, sitting area and ensuite bathroom with a walk-in rain shower. The low-tech facilities include tea and coffee kit and free bottled water.

This 372sq ft room has twin beds with a view out across the surrounding hillside and plantations. There’s an ensuite white-tiled bathroom with a walk-in rain shower, a garden-facing terrace and a traditional decor (ceiling fans, timber floors). All rooms have tea and coffee kit, and free bottled water.

Double Lakeview Bedrooms

This lake-facing, 408sq ft room has a king-size four-poster bed, views of the valley and tea hills, and an ensuite bathroom with twin sinks, bath tub and a rain shower. There’s direct access to a furnished private terrace. This room connects to a 130sq ft single room via the bathroom, so it’s ideal for families; there’s also a pull-out bed under the mattress. All rooms have tea and coffee kit, and free bottled water.
