Aman Venice

Luxury hotel Aman Venice has been the site of high-society soirées since the 16th century. Formerly the Palazzo Papadopoli, this grand Baroque building houses original frescoes – by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo – and Rococo and Neo-Renaissance decor have been restored to their former opulence. A hidden jetty entrance and private garden shield guests from prying paparazzi lenses; but, even if you have no credits to your name, the top-drawer staff will make you feel like a megastar.

Aman Venice is housed in a 16th-century palazzo in San Polo, the smallest of Venice’s six siesteres, overlooking the Grand Canal. It’s a 15-minute walk from St Mark’s Square and Basilica, and a 20-minute walk from the Doge’s Palace.

Each of these light and bright, south-facing rooms is uniquely designed – some with original 16th-century detailing – with views of the pretty garden or partial views of the Grand Canal. Located on the second to fifth floors of the Palazzo, many of these lavish rooms have frescoes, stucco ceilings and decorative reliefs, while furnishings are more contemporary. Formerly dubbed the Hall of the Four Doors, this wood-panelled room has a painted frieze and an ornately carved ceiling. It also has the oldest fireplace in the Palazzo, designed by famed 16th-century architect Jacopo d’Antonio Sansovino. Alcova Tiepolo Suite

The Alcova Tiepolo Suite is perhaps the hotel’s loveliest – it certainly charmed George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin, who spent their wedding night there. This elegant suite has a Chinese-style sitting room with painted walls and in the bedroom there’s a ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, a great 18th-century painter.
