Why we love it

“One for foodie travellers seeking a hit of adventure alongside their gastronomic experiences. Cape Town is one of our top winter-sun cities with its incredible combo of culture, cuisine and incredible landscapes, topped by the magnificent Table Mountain National Park. You'll discover incredible local flavours on a bespoke food tour, head into the mountains on personalised hikes (or paraglide from the peak!) and meet penguins as you sunbathe on the beach. Then, hop over into the lush Winelands, where you'll sip exquisite wines, dine on gourmet cuisine, and explore charming towns nestled amid rolling vineyards. Easily doable in just over a week, this is a top pick for a winter couple's trip.”

Scintillating views meet incredibly fresh produce and create a match made in heaven. Only an hour and half from Cape Town by road, this combination is a classic. We recommend at least half a day with one of our guides to get you to the more off-the-beaten-track wineries and restaurants.

Chobe National Park

Home to one of Africa's densest population of big game and a huge number of elephant. This is a great value safari option for Botswana, which typically tips the scales in terms of price. The very best time to visit is June-October for the famous elephant river sightings. You can get here by road from Victoria Falls or by light aircraft from other Botswana safari destinations.

We recommend 2 days

Etosha

Namibia's top game viewing destination and a true 'big 5' experience. Aim for the dry season June-September if you want to see the iconic waterhole gatherings, wildlife can be seen all year round, it is just a bit harder to spot. Two nights should be a minimum here and the best access is by road, with light aircraft flights also available.

We recommend 3 days

Eastern Cape Safari

Usually the final stop on the Garden Route, this is an underrated safari area where all the 'big 5' can be seen. There is a great array of accommodation and with Port Elizabeth airport only around 1 hour from the reserves, it makes for a great first or last stop.

We recommend 3 days

Greater Kruger

In our opinion, the perfect first-time safari destination with an exceptional chance of seeing the 'big 5' during your stay. Safari veterans also return year after year and the region is home to some of the top lodges on the planet. Access is best by domestic flight from either Johannesburg or Cape Town and we recommend 3 nights.

We recommend 3 days

Hermanus

An hour and a half from Cape Town, this is a fantastic stop for those looking to experience the region without taking on the full Garden Route. It lends itself to self-driving, so we would arrange a hire car for you and is one of the world's top whale-watching spots from August-November.

We recommend 1 days

Johannesburg

Somewhere almost every trip to Southern Africa and an incredibly well-connected city. There are some really top options for an overnight and a bustling food & drink scene for those looking to let their hair down. Most people stay just one night but some of the top hotels are so good that two can also work well.

Available on request
We recommend 4 days

Lake Malawi

A wonderful, alternative beach option in Southern Africa and one of the most unspoilt freshwater lakes on the planet. The lodges here all have amazing watersports available and a very laid-back approach to beach life. Access is best by light aircraft flight and it connects very well with Zambia's safari circuit. The more adventurous can drive from Malawi's capital Lilongwe.

Available on request
We recommend 2 days

Madikwe Game Reserve

Home to the 'big 5', malaria-free and great value, Madikwe is a fantastic option for families, landscape lovers and those looking to get a bit off the beaten track. We recommend at least 3 nights here and access is best by road from Johannesburg and the transfer is around 2 hours through lovely scenery.

Available on request
We recommend 5 days

Seychelles

The jewel of the Indian Ocean and one of the world's most sought after beach destinations. There is a real variety in hotels but most are very high-end and this is reflected in the price. April, May, October and November are considered the best times to visit and the international airport is well-connected.

Available on request
We recommend 5 days

Mauritius

The beautiful island of Mauritius is a fantastic standalone holiday destination but also connects very well with Southern Africa with a direct flight to/from Johannesburg. There is a wide variety of hotel styles and the island is generally more economical than the Seychelles or the Maldives.

We recommend 4 days

Mozambique Coast

A unique beach offering and one of our most popular destinations. With extremely easy access to Southern Africa, it combines perfectly with the Kruger for a one of a kind safari and beach trip. Some of the lodges can only be accessed by helicopter and we could spend weeks here. Culturally, there is a lot going on here and the local cuisine is exceptional.

Available on request
We recommend 2 days

Waterberg

Home to some of the world's oldest mountains, big game and a some incredible lodges. The Waterberg complements Madikwe wonderfully and has a host of fantastic activities that are unique to the region. Access is best by road or air from Madikwe and Johannesburg.

Available on request
We recommend 2 days

Sanbona

Located within the Karoo region, this is the best safari reserve in driving distance of Cape Town (3 hours). We should make it clear that it is not comparable to the Kruger or Madikwe, but it is a chance to see elephants and lions without an internal flight.

White sandy beaches, energetic Stone Town and a rich history - this island has it all. The ideal stay would be around 5 nights and take in a bit of everything from rooftop lunches in the old town to private dhow cruises at sunset.
