Palais Amani

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a Golden Age merchant of means, Palais Amani is the place for you. This regal riad in Fez’s medina has its roots in the 1600s, but has been treated to both 20th- and 21st-century makeovers. The result? Traditional riad trademarks (lofty ceilings, jewel-hued stained glass…), chicly offset by monochrome art-deco details and straight-from-the-souk textiles. Each zellige-tiled turn doles out a fresh antidote to the heat-hazed hubbub outside – descend lantern-lit steps to the heady hammam, settle down for supper in the citrus grove, then retreat to the rooftop terrace to take in the city’s sights, fresh mint tea in hand. Souvenir-seekers fear not: once you’re rested and relaxed, the maze-like Medina streets are mere steps away…

Each of these 24sq m rooms have either garden or Medina-views and are decorated with contemporary Moroccan furnishings, locally made tiles and embroidered fabrics. Each has a queen-size bed and an ensuite bathroom with either a walk-in shower or a bath tub. All rooms have WiFi, a TV, minibar, air-conditioning and bathrobes.

Junior Suite

The Junior Suites have twin or double beds and are either split over two floors or are housed in the salons once used to entertain prestigious visitors to the riad. They have an elegant salon, and a bathroom with either a shower or tub. There’s an extra toilet on the sleeping level. Each room has a flatscreen TV, free WiFi, an iPod dock and air-conditioning.

The Grand Suite

Overlooking the garden and hills beyond the Medina, this 100sq m suite spans the entire south wing of the first floor, with stained glass windows, a reception room, private salon, his and hers dressing rooms and a bathroom with mosaic tiles, a plunge tub and separate shower. The suite has a flatscreen TV, free WiFi, dock with preloaded iPod and air-conditioning.

Exclusive Use

For an intimate getaway, Palais Amani’s 18 rooms and suites can be booked for groups of 12 to 36 guests. Some of the suites have plunge tubs and stained glass, while others have mosaic double showers and elegant salons. All rooms feature contemporary Moroccan interiors and garden or Medina views. Plus, there’s free WiFi, a TV, minibar, air-conditioning and luxurious bathrobes. Enjoy full privacy and free reign of the property, with full-board accommodation (drinks included) – they’ll also throw in a cooking workshop at Fez Cooking School, and a hammam and massage session for each guest. A minimum stay of three nights applies.
