Best Of Northern Ethiopia

Ethiopia is an incredible country, and it delights us to support the growth of its luxury travel industry over the past few years. Ethiopia draws travellers to its dramatic landscapes, fascinating history and rich culture, and new boutique and luxury lodges are opening up to support them. As this is a budding industry, expect the accommodation to be less luxurious than Nemo’s usual standard. However, travelling is easy around Ethiopia, with reliable domestic flights, friendly guides and the chance to explore a lesser-known corner of Africa (before everyone else finds it!).

A few more tips...

Ethiopia

  • Arrange a guide for the trip. You’ll have access to a top professional at all times and time to explore on your own when you want it.

Addis Ababa

  • Addis has a fascinating history and growing food and drink scene (it’s more than just a stopover).
  • On your first or last evening, enjoy a cultural evening with a cooking class and traditional dance.

Gheralta

  • Climb to the exceptional rock churches.
  • Soak in these views, they’re some of Ethiopia’s best.

Axum

  • The accommodation is less luxurious than Nemo’s usual standard (but it’s worth it!).
  • Visit the ancient religious sites and immerse yourself in the fascinating local culture.
  • Time your stay with a religious festival - Hidarzion (end of November) or Timkat (end of January).

Lalibela

  • Gaze in awe at the monolithic churches and marvel at what humans can do.
  • Watch it come to life with religious ceremonies and displays on a Sunday.

Simien Mountains

  • Pack a pair of binoculars and walking boots and enjoy the trails.
  • Look for the rare Ghelada baboons and Simien wolves.
  • Allow your guide to tailor your experience to your fitness level.

Gondar

  • Enjoy this spectacular ancient city, it has UNESCO World Heritage status.
  • Feel the history in the 17th-century walled city of Fasil Ghebbi (the former royal enclosure).

Lake Tana

  • Spend a half or full day on the lake, a great contrast to the rest of the trip.
  • Don’t miss Blue Nile Falls, especially when the water is high from September to December.
